There are a number of situations in which a synchronous approach to teaching might well be the best choice, but under the conditions that obtain at present, with a very large shift to remote activities, a collection of asynchronous methods is most appropriate. This is our rationale:

There are no scheduling problems, geographic barriers or device restrictions to an asynchronous approach. Sharing on vidgrid means anyone in your class can access the necessary material any time. Your students interact at their own pace and at their own convenience. For students with complex and/or difficult domestic arrangements this could mean the difference between success and failure. Typically it is the already disadvantaged student who will be further disadvantaged by the need to be in a particular place at a particular time.
Asynchronous content can be refined and improved in a way that synchronous cannot. In synchronous environments, a learning experience is finite and cannot evolve.
Asynchronous learning has the potential to bring multiple experts into one learning experience. Knowledge in a remote asynchronous environment can be built by groups to collect the best of the best in learning.
By providing time to reflect on instruction, and develop their thoughts more completely, students can more readily contribute to class-wide discussions, allowing them to become authentic co-creators of knowledge.
Asynchronous learning accommodates individual learning preferences. Students can operate at their own pace, using habits and techniques that suit them best.
Students who are reluctant to participate in-person are more likely to respond when they have extra time and can do so via text rather than verbally.
Synchronous learning places heavy demand on platforms like Zoom and in the present situation, with so much demand, it would be helpful to reduce our use.
