If a Student Reports Any Type of Sexual Misconduct Under Title IX

If a Student reports any type of sexual misconduct under Title IX Sexual misconduct includes: sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic/dating violence and stalking. Often, students report these types of situations to instructors. Here are some ways to provide resources and support to the student.

Provide Support to Make Sure the Student is Safe

If a student has been impacted by sexual misconduct, encourage the student to contact the University police at 402-472-2222. Students may file a criminal report but are not obligated. However, University police can provide resources such as safety planning, escorts, information on obtaining protection orders (etc.) to support student safety.

Provide the Student Confidential Resource Information

There are several confidential resources available on campus and in the community. These include: Victim Advocacy services, CAPS, the Women’s Center (etc.) For a full list please visit: https://www.unl.edu/equity/title-ix

Refer the Student to the Title IX Office (Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance)

The office is located at 128 Canfield Administration. Our phone number is 472-3417. Even if the student does not wish to file a formal report, the Title IX staff can inform the student of all reporting options, resources and possible temporary modifications, such as: change in housing, extension for coursework, no-contact order (etc.)

If You are Designated as a "Responsible Employee," Inform the Student You are Legally Obligated to Report the Matter to the Title IX Office

Responsible Employees must report information involving Title IX to the Title IX Coordinator, Tami Strickman. You can inform the student that the Title IX office will reach out to the student. However, the student does not have to share information with the Title IX office.
