Paying the Student Bill

The student bill is generated on or before the 25th of the month and is due by the 12th of the following month.

For Spring 2023, your student will see charges appear by January 25, and they will need to be paid by February 12. Your student's bill will show charges for classes, which may include tuition, special fees, and mandatory fees, as well as charges for University Housing, textbook purchases, parking, NCard charges made at on-campus vendors, etc. Charges such as tuition, fees, and housing will be grouped together for an entire semester on your student's first bill, though they may see adjustments on subsequent bills if they drop/add courses or make Housing changes. Campus Store (formerly the University Bookstore) purchases and NCard charges will appear each month, depending on the number and dates of purchases.

If your student has granted eConsent (which they would've done the first time they logged into MyRED, so it's highly likely that your student did it), your student will get a billing notification in their Huskers email, and then they or their designated payor can pay in MyRED. If they have not granted eConsent (which is rare), the bill is delivered to the permanent address on file.

In MyRED, have your student hover over the Student Accounts tab, as shown in the image, to view or pay the bill.

What is on the bill

Your student's bill will include

Tuition for courses
University Housing charges (if your student lives on campus)
Mandatory student fees
University health insurance (if applicable)
Financial aid and scholarships
Anything your student may have charged to their NCard Account, such as textbooks, Campus Store purchases, parking permit, or food/drink.

How to pay the bill

Your student can access and pay their bill through their MyRED portal. Accepted forms of payment include electronic check, debit or credit card, and foreign currency. Check out an overview of the various payment options. If your student pays the student bill using an electronic check, they should make sure they know their bank account number and routing number, and that they realize that these are NOT the same as their debit or credit card number!

Paying the student bill via electronic check rather than a credit/debit card avoids a 2.75% processing fee.

I (or another family member) plan to pay my student's bill. How do I gain access?

Your student can add you or whomever is helping to pay the bill as an authorized payor, which will give access to view and pay the bill. Keep in mind that this does not automatically give access to other parts of MyRED, such as financial aid or grade information. If your student would like to grant permission for those items, they can add a guest user in their MyRED by clicking “Manage Guest Users” under the Profile main menu and checking the applicable boxes.

Is it possible to spread the student bill into smaller payments?

Yes, this can be done using the Husker Payment Plan, which breaks down the semester bill into three installments. Your student will need to enroll in this plan each semester they would like to participate. For the Fall semester, the Husker Payment Plan enrollment opens on January 25 and closes on February 12. Your student can enroll in the Husker Payment Plan in MyRED under the Student Accounts tab.

What are "student fees"?

You've likely noticed throughout this orientation that we have mentioned that many services are provided at "no extra cost due to payment of student fees." Student fees cover the costs of services and facilities such as campus technology, recreation, Health Center, libraries, transit, and more. Some fees are assessed at a flat rate, while others are assessed per credit hour. For more information, check out this detailed explanation of the purpose and breakdown of fees.

Your student will see these fees on their first student bill of the semester, though there may be adjustments after the first bill if they make changes to their enrolled credit hours.
